Guys and gals you do not need a boat to enjoy great catfishing. There are more anglers who fish
from the bank then fish from a boat, and many of the techniques used to catch big cats can be used
from the bank with just a few modifications. I personally still fish from the bank whenever I fish on
the st. marys river in ohio. With a little prep preparation before your trip , you can be just as
successful when bank fishing.
Do your homework on local habitat for catfish. Whenever i fish unfamiliar waters I always visit the
local bait shops and chew the fat with the workers. They talk to local bank fisherman everyday and
they can give the low down on the best spots to go. This is a must for successful trip. Also i would
recommend you get a map of the waters you want to fish. Most states will have maps of the
lake showing depths and areas where certain species of fish have been known to be caught. Be
careful though allot of times these maps are out of date so, look at the map at the bait shop , and
have them circle the best spots for you. I personally use this method. As  A general rule I
look for land points that stick out into the main lake adjacent to a sandy area. For example on lake
st marys in ohio there are many public beach areas. The Beach  areas are ideal spots to bank fish.
look at each beach area and find a point next to the beach that sticks out into the water. Many times
the state will build rock points out past swim area buoys. These points are where you want to be.
You are probably asking why? Well, these area offer ideal bottom structure break areas where the
depth and bottom surface changes, this is where you want your bait to be. Big cats will wait in
these areas and feed at night. You want to cast your bait into the shallow area before the depth
drops. you will have to cast to different spot on the point until you find this area. If you are using
multiple poles it will take less time. Also , areas where there is a creak or river emptying into your
lake is and ideal spot. You fish these spots the same as the beach areas looking for the break
areas, also look for any sunken log or tree areas these areas often hide the big flathead cats.
Bank Fishing on lakes and ponds rod holder and pole set
up:
When you bank fish from a lake or pond , or slow  moving river, Cast you line out to the best spot
you can reach, Then place  your pole in your rod holder. If you are using a spinning outfit open your
bail so your line can move off the spool freely. If you are using a spin cast reel click your cast button
and make sure your line can move freely. The reason for this if you get a big catfish on your line it
take your bait and run! If your line is tight the big cat will feel the tension and let go before you can
remove your pole from the rod holder. When you see you line going out, remove your rod from the
holder and reel your line tight. Then the next time you feel any movement set the hook! and reel your
big cat in. If you are fishing at night you have good chance of hooking a big cat. They love to roam
close to the shore line at night. If you fish at night . (later in this article i explain the best methods to
attract fish to your area at night.
When you bank fishing for catfish on a river, you can fish different locations by drifting your bait
using a slip bobber rig
CLICK HERE For Tackle & Rig Set Ups When you use a slip bobber rig you
can let your bait to move downstream naturally. your rig will float right through rapidsand settle into
holes where the big catfish hide. You can either wade with your pole and rig or follow it downstream
along the bank. If you find a hole that holds fish, stay there awhile until they stop biting, Then start
your rig down stream again.
Make sure you to set your bobber stop so that your bait will hang 1 to 2 feet above the river
bottom. There will be trial and error need here. Make sure you keep your a line above the water at all
times so bank fishing rig drifts naturally downstream. Keep your line tight at all times, if you get a
bite you will need to react quickly. if you have slack line you cannot set your hook properly. This is a
key mistake for beginners of river steam bank fishing.
If your rig hangs up , jerk your pole just hard enough to get your rig moving down stream again
Release line as the bait moves downstream. If the rig hangs up, your bobber will tip over or stop.
Lift it a bit to get the bait moving again. Then tease the rig around boulders, ease it alongside fallen
trees and work it through holes below rapids. Drift by one side of a hole, then down the other and
finally right down the middle. If nothing happens after you've worked an area thoroughly, move your
bobber stop up and drift through deeper. Or move downstream to another spot and try again. If
possible, shift sides of the river every now and then to present baits in every likely spot as you move.
Best bank fishing locations:
bank fishing on rivers Technique:
I strongly recommend you use nothing less then a 7ft rod, 7 to 10ft fiberglass surf rods can be
purchased fairly cheap. I have some identified on my catfish rigs and tackle web page.
you purchase or have a rod you are using that is not illuminated, paint the tip with fluorescent
orange or green paint . This way you can see the tip at night. also if you use a fluorescent light , the
tip with really stick out at night.
Bank fishing Tackle: Rod
Bank fishing Tackle: Reel
I strongly recommend you use a saltwater reel because of the cranking power needed to real in the
really big cats. The one I recommend has very large handle and is very inexpensive with high
quality for a saltwater tackle product.  Please visit my catfish rigs and tackle web page to read the
reviews and look at the product .

The best catfish rigs I recommend for bank fishing is what is commonly called a "slip sinker rig",
"set rig" and "slip set rig" The slip sinker rig, and the slip set rig are  best used when fishing on
ponds and lakes. When fishing rivers that have fast flowing current it is best to use a slip bobber
set up. or a modified slip sinker rig. To find out more details on how to make these rigs go to my
catfish rigs and tackle web page.

I recommend you purchase some rod holders when you are bank fishing for catfish or any other
fish you are still fishing for. You can buy them or make your own. if you are a handy man you can
make them your self using inexpensive PVC pipe. purchase a 1 1/2" a 4ft long piece so you can
  make 4 rod holders. Also purchase some 1 1/2" x 1 1/2"  x  1/8"  (standard lengths are 8ft.)  and
some hose clamps that  will fit a 1 1/2" dia. (2 ) for rod holder you make. Now cut your angle iron to
a 3ft length with a hack saw or cutoff saw . cut a 60deg angle on one end so you can push your rod
holder into the ground. With a hack saw or cutoff saw cut your PVC pipe into 12" lengths. Attach your
PVC Pipe to the angle iron , opposite of 60 deg cut, using 2 hose clamps. Thats it you are done.
You can purchase rod holders from many places and they are very inexpensive. I buy mine
from Bass Pro Shop. there all makes and models , I like the ones i can place my lantern and my
poles on. thats just my preference. They all work. Fishing from a concrete riverside walkway? No
problem. The Bucket Mount Rod Holder balances two fishing rods on a five-gallon bucket you fill
with water or rocks for support. The holders' angle can be changed to fit your needs. It works great
on any flat surface. Good holders to use when bank fishing for smaller cats include the
Combination Rod & Bait Holder, which mounts to a lawn chair and has a built-in holder for
your worm box or liver tub; and Doug-jo's Catfish Killer is a no-frills, metal spike rod holder that's
solid, inexpensive and made to last a lifetime.

Bank Fishing For Catfish At Night  Tips And Equipment
Paint your rod tip with fluorescents.I Learned this tip about five years ago when I started night fishing.
You will be amazed how hard it is to see when the sun goes down. Even with lantern light it is hard to
see line movement. if you paint your rod tip,it will be very noticeable at night. You need to see rod tip
movement at night. Some nights the catfish will be bitting lightly and you need to
see the slightest movement of your rod tip. All my rod tips are painted. Both fluorescent green and
orange work well. You can pick up your paint at  any hobby shop.
Bank Fishing With Underwater Fishing Lights:
Submerged light is one of the most under used night fishing techniques . I consider it the most
important, If you are serious about catching some big catfish, I mean in the 5lb plus range this is a
must investment. Since i purchased mine I have caught channel, and blues 5lb plus every time I have
gone out. A submerged lighting system is especially important when you are bank fishing, and here's
why:
It basically creates a massive swarm of feeding fish in any fishing spot by first attracting small
organisms called "zooplankton" to your spot. Next it attracts the native baitfish in the area by the
hundreds - which soon brings the game fish swarming to the area. It is a scientific way of creating a
food chain feeding frenzy in your spot, and it has proven to catch more fish for many
different types of fishermen in both saltwater and freshwater. i only recommend one , I have
purchased it and I use it religiously , every time I go out night fishing in my boat or when i do my bank
fishing from the St. Marys river in Ohio. This System is so powerful that the manufacture give a
180 day free trial if you try it and don't like they will give your money back no questions asked.
